Musings on mathematical projects

I've been thinking about little mathematical projects I have. I've been thinking and wondering should I devout more time to them. I become unsatisfied with a certain area of mathmatics and feel like I should add something new to the existing field of knowledge. The question is are any of my addtitions useful? I don't know? More time need to be spent tweaking the ideas I have so they are more elegant. Could I get a paper in a journal out of the work I've done?
